The fake parts problem.
Counterfeit plasma consumables are out there, and they’re hard to pick. They’re usually very close copies of the genuine product, so it’s easy to be misled into thinking you’ve found a bargain. The bargain doesn’t last. Counterfeits often deliver only a fraction of the cutting life of genuine parts.
One manufacturer found this out the hard way. In a side-by-side trial, they burned through three sets of counterfeit consumables to do the same cutting as one genuine set, and the genuine setup also produced better hole and slot quality.
Hypertherm takes it seriously enough to call in the police. Raids on counterfeit makers and distributors have led to five executives being arrested and tens of thousands of dollars of fake consumables seized.
Your warranty is on the line.
Hypertherm doesn’t cover damage caused by non-genuine parts, and treats their use as misuse of the product. With Powermax now carrying a six-year warranty, that’s a lot of cover to throw away to save a few dollars on a nozzle.
How to spot a bait and switch:
• Price too good to be true. Suspiciously low pricing on “genuine” consumables is the first red flag.
• Unknown sellers. Be wary of “genuine” claims from unauthorised distributors, unknown agents or random online listings.
• Packaging that looks off. Check consumables and packaging carefully for discrepancies.
• Ask for the certificate. Authorised partners hold a current, dated certificate from Hypertherm. If someone says they can match our price, ask them to show you theirs. Hypertherm also publishes its list of authorised partners on its website.
